It's a bookmark!  It fits nicely into any book with pages up to 9 inches long.  The black leather is 1 mm thick and is adorned with assorted glass beads, a sterling cross on one end, and an African Sandcast bead on the other.  African Tribesmen make these beads by pouring powdered glass into molds and firing them at high temperatures to fuse the glass.  Sticks placed at the centers burn away leaving the stringing hole.
